The glimpse of fall rain had me (sort of) longing for cozy fireside reads with tea so it seemed fitting to take a peak through some of our past fireplace installations. Second to the kitchen, the living/family room is likely the most used room in the home; it must ooze warmth and invitation. It’s where the chats are had, the hockey games are watched, and moments are made. Whether the room suits a crisp concrete hearth and mantel or warm coastal stone and shiplap, it is a space meant to reveal much of the home’s identity. The mantle could be a piece of reclaimed lumber from travels or material harvested during the re-build of the home. When designing these features some considerations must be taken such as: the size of the room compared to the heat output on the unit; whether you want a TV above (mantle height matters here); whether you need a heat shift to disperse some of the heat; does a hearth make sense; or something as simple as where will the stockings hang?
